Gustav Klimt représente le couple enlacé sur un fond doré et plat. Les deux personnages se tiennent au bord d'une prairie fleurie qui s'étend jusqu'aux pieds nus de la femme. L'homme porte une robe imprimée de motifs géométriques et de volutes subtiles. Il porte une couronne de vigne, tandis que la femme porte une couronne de fleurs. Elle est représentée dans une robe fluide à motifs floraux. Le visage de l'homme n'est pas dévoilé au public ; il est penché vers le bas pour déposer un baiser sur la joue de la femme, et ses mains la serrent. Elle a les yeux fermés, un bras enroulé autour du cou de l'homme, l'autre reposant délicatement sur sa main, et son visage est tourné vers le haut pour recevoir le baiser de l'homme.
Klimt a peint Le baiser peu de temps après son Plafond viennois en trois parties série, qui fit scandale et fut critiquée comme étant à la fois « pornographique » et témoignant d'« excès pervers ». Ces œuvres avaient transformé l'artiste en enfant terrible Pour ses opinions antiautoritaires et antipopularistes sur l'art, il écrivait : « Si vous ne pouvez plaire à tout le monde par vos actes et votre art, faites plaisir à quelques-uns. »
Le baiser a été exposée en 1908 à Vienne dans la Kunstschau – le bâtiment créé en collaboration par Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt, Otto Prutscher, Koloman Moser et bien d'autres, à l'occasion des célébrations à Vienne du soixantième anniversaire du règne de l'empereur François-Joseph Ier, du 1er juin au 16 novembre 1908.
Le Baiser fut cependant accueilli avec enthousiasme et fut acheté, encore inachevé, par le gouvernement autrichien lorsqu'il fut exposé au public.

It's a picture I've always liked. The image is crisp and clear (Unlike a Wentworth puzzle of another favourite picture I have). It fits together perfectly because of the well cut pieces - which are all similar shaped - how fiendish! Usually you'd start with the edges, but the whimsies are a better place to begin.
There’s something a bit strange about my purchase of this. One of my excuses for buying wooden jigsaws rather than cheaper and bigger cardboard ones is the variety of cutting patterns. But apart from the whimsies and the pieces around them, all the non-edge pieces in this one are four-sided with one lug on each side, with corners shared with other pieces. That’s about as conventional as you can get. But there’s an artistic difference with the straight lines, which suit the painting’s style, and I’ve got another wooden puzzle with the same kind of pattern, which works very well. This isn’t a hugely difficult puzzle, but the image has just three three colour/texture styles, which keeps you busy if you solve without picture peeking.
I never received any of my order. Very disappointing.

I've just looked at the tracking info.
It doesn't look great unfortunately - we cannot understand why it has not left the Royal Mail distribution centre so it may have been lost.
We will file a report with them and see if we can determine the whereabouts.
If nothing conclusive comes back from them we can either reship the order or process a refund.
